Online Therapy for Insomnia in Alberta

Some nights it's lying awake for hours trying to fall asleep. Other nights it's falling asleep fine and waking at 3 a.m. with your mind racing. If this has been happening most nights for weeks or months, it's worth getting some support.

I'm Maria Tsoukalas, a Registered Psychologist based in Calgary, and I offer online therapy for insomnia and sleep difficulties to adults across Alberta — Calgary, Edmonton, and communities in between. Sessions take place through a secure, encrypted platform, so the only thing you need on your end is a private space and a stable internet connection.

This is individual therapy for adults dealing with ongoing sleep difficulties: trouble falling asleep, frequent waking, unrefreshing sleep, or a mind that won't quiet down once the lights go off. Below, you'll find how the process works, what a typical course of therapy looks like, and what it costs.

Why this matters

Insomnia doesn't respond to willpower alone.

You've probably noticed that the harder you try to fall asleep, the more difficult it is. Most people who come to therapy for sleep problems have already tried the standard advice (or "sleep hygiene") — no screens before bed, a cooler room, cutting caffeine after noon. While this can sometimes help with some sleep issues, it won't when it comes to insomnia. What you need is a thorough assessment of what the sleep problems are and a plan to address them.

Therapy for insomnia looks at what's maintaining the pattern: the thoughts that show up at 2 a.m., the behaviours that develop around trying to force sleep, and the anxiety that can build around bedtime itself once sleep starts to feel unpredictable. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the first line of treatment for insomnia and works better in the long term than medications. You'll learn why your sleep is disrupted and exactly what you need to do in order to improve it.

The process

A clear path, from our first conversation to a plan that fits you.

01
Request a free consultation
Reach out through the contact form for a free, 15-minute consultation. We'll talk about what your sleep has looked like recently, and you can ask questions before deciding whether this is the right fit.
02
Book your first appointment
Your first session is where I get a full picture of your sleep patterns, your history, and what you've already tried. We'll also talk about what else might be contributing, since sleep difficulties can often coincide with anxiety, grief, or a major change.
03
Attend sessions online
All appointments happen through an encrypted platform built for healthcare providers. I have specific training for working online, and I see clients anywhere in Alberta. You'll need a private space and a stable connection.
04
Build a plan based on your sleep patterns
Depending on what's going on, this might involve looking at your sleep-wake schedule, the thoughts and behaviours around bedtime, and what's keeping the cycle going. How often we meet is something we decide together, but typically begins with weekly sessions to address the issues with your sleep as efficiently as possible.
05
Adjust as we go
Sleep patterns don't always change in a straight line. We track what's working and adjust the plan as your sleep — and your life — shifts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can online therapy actually help with insomnia?
Yes. Treatment is as effective online as it is in person.
What's the difference between sleep hygiene tips and therapy for insomnia?
Sleep hygiene (a consistent bedtime, less screen time, a dark room) helps set the conditions for good sleep, but on its own isn't enough to overcome insomnia. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) looks at what's maintaining the pattern, not just the environment around it.
Do you diagnose or treat sleep disorders like sleep apnea?
No. While I do screen for sleep apnea, a diagnosis requires a sleep study (something completed by a sleep clinic or sleep physician). If something suggests a medical sleep disorder, I'll recommend you also see your doctor or a sleep specialist alongside our work together.
Do you prescribe medication for sleep?
No. Psychologists in Alberta don't prescribe medication. If medication is something you want to explore, that conversation happens with your physician.
How many sessions does insomnia therapy usually take?
There's no fixed number, but many clients start to see improvements in their sleep anywhere from 3–4 sessions after the intake appointment.
What if my sleep problems are tangled up with anxiety or grief?
That's common. Sleep, anxiety, and grief often affect each other, and I take the full picture into account rather than treating insomnia as separate from what may be happening in other areas of your life.
Do I need a referral from my doctor?
No referral is needed to book a consultation or start therapy.
What areas of Alberta do you serve?
All of Alberta. Sessions are online only, so I work with clients in Calgary, Edmonton, and everywhere in between.
What happens in the first session?
We'll talk through your sleep history, what you've already tried, and what else is going on in your life. By the end, we'll have a sense of direction for the work.
Is online therapy as private as in-person?
Yes. Sessions run through an encrypted platform built for healthcare providers, but it's also important that you are in a private space during sessions and using headphones to help protect your privacy as much as possible.
How much does it cost, and is it covered by insurance?
Sessions are $260 for 50 minutes. Most extended health and employee assistance plans cover a portion, and I provide a receipt after each session for reimbursement. Direct billing isn't available yet.
What days are you available?
I currently see clients Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
