Portrait of Maria Tsoukalas therapist counsellor

Hi, I’m Maria

I believe that therapy is for everyone. It’s an opportunity to pause your busy life; to examine what is important to you; and to consider how to cultivate the life you want to live. My role is to create an objective and non-judgmental space, and guide you in understanding yourself better. Here, you can learn new ways of coping with the challenges that life brings.

Our work together should encourage positive change in your life and provide you with the tools to continue that momentum. The treatment approach I use depends on each individual’s needs, and I have training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution Focused Therapy, and Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT). I bring to the table not only my training and experience, but also an open mind, curiosity, and dedication to making sure you get the best care possible.

I’m a Registered Psychologist (#3998) and member of the College of Alberta Psychologists and the Psychologists Association of Alberta. I completed my graduate degree in New York City and have called Calgary home for the last ten years. During this time, I’ve worked in a criminal forensic setting, providing therapy for incarcerated individuals and completing risk assessments for the Parole Board of Canada. I have also worked in primary care with physicians and their patients as a Behavioural Health Consultant. Working in primary care, in particular, has given me an opportunity to work with a wide range of people from different backgrounds and circumstances and taught me how to create a nuanced and individualized treatment plan that is tailored to client’s needs.

I am bilingual (Greek) and growing up as a second-generation immigrant helped me understand from an early age the role culture and identity play in everyday life. I welcome diversity and take great care to approach my work with clients in a culturally responsive manner.
