Online Therapy with Maria Tsoukalas
I offer individual counseling for adults. My areas of expertise include anxiety, insomnia and sleep, grief and loss, and relationships.
I see clients across Alberta, working with people in Calgary, Edmonton, and everywhere in between.
My training includes several evidence-based approaches and I draw from them based on what each person needs:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Mindfulness
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Solution Focused Therapy
Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP)
Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT)
I approach every session through an interpersonal, trauma-informed, and attachment-based lens. In practice, that means I take time to understand the full context of what you’re dealing with, your history, and what your relationships look like–not just the presenting concern.
Why Online Therapy Over In-Person?
For a lot of people, the barrier to starting therapy is finding a way to make it fit inside an already busy schedule. When work and life are already demanding, it’s easy to put off finding support even when anxiety, stress, sleep problems, grief, or relationship issues are affecting your daily life.
Online therapy removes travel time and lets you attend from wherever you are in Alberta. Many studies now show that online therapy is as effective as in person, and for many people it’s much more convenient. All appointments are online through a secured platform, with services available across the province.
My approach is collaborative, grounded, and practical. The first session is about understanding who you are, what your life looks like, and your goals. From there, I tend to focus on the here and now: what is actually getting in the way, and what strategies can help you move forward.
The Process
-
Reach out through the contact form to request a free, 15-minute consultation. This is the best way to determine fit, availability, or whether online therapy is the right option for you.
-
Once you decide to move forward, we book your first session. The first appointment is a chance for me to get to know you, understand what brought you here, and for you to get a sense of what working together is actually like. We discuss your goals and begin to clarify the direction of the work.
-
All appointments are online only and delivered through an encrypted platform. I have specialized training for working online and can see clients anywhere across Alberta. All you need is a private space and a stable internet connection.
-
How often we meet depends on a combination of factors. Most people find that somewhere between once a week and once a month works well. That’s a decision we’ll make together at the end of the first appointment, based on your goals and circumstances.
-
Your input plays a critical role in how the work unfolds. I’ll offer suggestions and strategies shaped by your goals. Your feedback about what is most helpful actively guides what we do together. If something is not landing, we talk about it and adjust.
Why Choose Maria
I am a Registered Psychologist in Alberta and the Northwest Territories, and a member of the Psychologists Association of Alberta.
Before moving into private practice, I worked across a wide range of environments: a criminal forensic setting providing therapy for incarcerated individuals and completing risk assessments for the Parole Board of Canada; primary care as a Behavioural Health Consultant; Indigenous Mental Health and Elbow River Healing Lodge; and an outpatient community mental health clinic. That diverse experience shapes how I approach building a treatment plan that’s specific to you.
I completed my graduate degree in New York City and have called Calgary home for the last 15 years. I am bilingual (Greek) and growing up as a second-generation immigrant helped me understand from an early age the role culture and identity play in everyday life. I welcome diversity and take great care to approach my work with clients in a culturally responsive manner.
